When I first started my career, I was what I would call a hesitant leader.
I didn't really view myself as a leader.
I was riddled with fear and anxiety, suffered from low self-confidence, and preferred to avoid interacting with others.
But somehow I survived.
As the years progressed, I played the game.
I read all of the self-help books, attended all the workshops, and followed all the gurus.
Over a lifetime, I carved out a place for myself through focus, determination, and hard work.
I pretended to have my act together.
But all I had really done was move from a hesitant leader to a reactive one.
Instead of releasing my anxiety, I suppressed it.
Instead of stepping into my greatness, I played it safe.
Instead of creating meaningful connections, I built walls to keep people out.
Even though I had the success of a six-figure income, a steady job, a great family, and all of the toys, I still felt like a phoney.
I was able to play a good game.
But in reality, I still had my panic attacks, low self-confidence, and my walls.
I too used to think that mindfulness was woo-woo.
But I had tried everything else, so what did I have to lose?
I knew I was onto something when, about 2 weeks into my daily meditation practice, I noticed the I could breath.
And for an asthmatic, learning to breath is a good thing!
It was like a weight had been lifted off my chest.
During these brief moments of calm, I was able to catch glimpses of peace and truly relax.
And then the darkness hit.
I went through a period of dark thoughts, sleepless nights, and emotional hijacks.
Anyone that says mindfulness is woo-woo hasn't faced their inner demons.
If they knew how difficult it was to slay the dragon, they would say mindfulness makes you a warrior.
If they opened their minds, let go of their biases, and uncovered their blindspots, they would say mindfulness makes you brave.
If they did the hard inner work required to stand in defiance of their inner critic and follow their purpose, they would say mindfulness makes you a hero.
